Frodo & Sam

You carry the whole war on one small chain — every step toward Mount Doom is a step the whole table takes with you.

Hard

Background

Frodo & Sam begin at home in The Shire, as far from the fires of Mount Doom as any road in Middle-earth can put them. Frodo bears the One Ring; Sam bears Frodo. Together they count as a single hero, but they are the single most important piece on the board — the errand on which every other hero's labor ultimately depends.

Your long road runs east and south, through wild country crawling with Nazgûl and shadow troops, all the way to the Cracks of Doom. You cannot win the war by fighting it; you win it by surviving it — by slipping through the gaps in Sauron's attention while your companions draw his Eye and his armies away from you. Keep the Hope burning, stay unseen, and reach the mountain.

How you win

The team shares one victory: complete every selected Objective, and the very last one must always be Destroy the One Ring — the moment Frodo casts the Ring into the fire at Mount Doom. That final step is yours and yours alone, so the entire game is a countdown to getting the two of you to the mountain alive.

You win by staying in the game. The team loses the instant Frodo's Hope reaches Despair, so your survival is the victory condition. Let your companions clear the objectives and thin the shadow armies; your contribution is to keep moving toward Mordor, keep your searches quiet, and preserve every point of Hope until the road runs out at the Cracks of Doom.

How they play

Your turn is built around one action above all others: Travel. But when Frodo travels — or is brought along by a companion — the moving character must spend a Stealth symbol to cover the journey, or else roll a search in the destination, and a search can bleed Hope fast. So your rhythm is really prepare, then move:

  • Prepare — at a haven, discard a region card showing Stealth to bank a Stealth token for the road ahead
  • Travel — advance toward Mordor, spending Stealth to slip in unseen
  • Fellowship — when a companion shares your location, let them hand you a region card carrying the symbols you need (this is how the team feeds you)

You lean hard on two symbols: Stealth to travel without triggering a search, and Resistance — the Ring itself — to buy Fate rerolls when a search or battle die comes up cruel. You are not a fighter and not a builder; you are the quiet, precious cargo the whole party escorts east.

Strengths

  • Everything the team does exists to get you to Mount Doom. That makes you the most important hero at the table — companions will spend their actions, cards, and troops to shield you, and rightly so.

  • A single Stealth symbol lets you travel with no search roll at all. Move well-supplied and you can cross dangerous country without losing a single point of Hope.

  • The Ring's Resistance symbol powers Fate rerolls. When a search or battle die threatens Hope, spending Resistance to reroll can turn a Weary or Exposed result into a clean Slip By.

  • In a haven, the Exposed search result is ignored entirely. Resting between legs of the journey lets you refill on Stealth while sitting on the safest ground the map offers.

Weaknesses

  • !

The whole team loses the instant Frodo's Hope reaches Despair. Every point of Hope lost anywhere on the board is charged to your survival, and there is no second chance — you are the game's fragile heart.

  • !

Travel without Stealth forces a search, and every Nazgûl in your region plus every shadow troop in your location adds a die. Deep in enemy country, one careless move can cost several points of Hope at once.

  • !

You have no real way to fight or build and a very long road to walk. Without companions preparing symbols and escorting you, you simply cannot advance safely — you are only as strong as the team around you.

  • !

The Eye of Sauron and the Nazgûl are drawn toward Frodo again and again by shadow cards. If the party can't keep pulling the Eye away with Attacks and Captures, danger accumulates squarely on your position.

Tips & tricks

  • Tip

Never step onto a dangerous road without a Stealth symbol in hand. Prepare at havens whenever you get the chance so you always have cover for the next leg — an unplanned search is how Hope quietly drains away.

  • Tip

Position yourself where a companion can reach you and use Fellowship to hand you a region card carrying the symbols you need. You'll rarely gather everything you need alone — coordinate so the party delivers Stealth and Resistance right when you need them.

  • Tip

Don't spend the Ring's Resistance on routine rolls. Save it for the search or battle that would genuinely cost you dear, then Fate the worst dice away. A reroll held in reserve is a point of Hope protected.

  • Tip

Treat havens as staging points, not just shelters. Pause to stock up on Stealth and let the team pull the Eye and Nazgûl away with Attacks and Captures, then make your dash through the cleared ground while the road is quiet.
