Arwen

The Evenstar of Rivendell — she carries hope where the road is darkest and dares the Nazgûl to follow.

Medium

Background

Arwen Undómiel, the Evenstar of her people, begins the game at Rivendell — the hidden refuge of Elrond deep in the Elven north, and the one haven that most heroes will pass through on the long road east. In the tales she rides against the Black Riders at the Ford of Bruinen and gives Frodo the light to carry when all else fails; on the board she is the keeper of morale and the friend Frodo needs at the start of his journey.

Rivendell sits astride Frodo's early path out of the Shire, close to the Elven (green) army of the north. That placement makes Arwen a natural first guardian: she can meet the Ring-bearers as they leave Eriador, steady the team's Hope, and hand off the symbols Frodo will need before the Fellowship scatters. Where others rush toward the front, Arwen's work begins at home — turning a haven into a launching point.

How you win

There is only one victory, and it belongs to the whole table: complete every Objective and finally let Frodo cast the Ring into Mount Doom. Arwen's contribution is to keep the team's central life total — Frodo's Hope — high enough to survive the journey, and to make sure the Ring-bearers leave the north stealthy and well-supplied.

As an Elf-lady tied to hope and to defiance of the Nazgûl, Arwen shines in the game's fragile opening. Escort Frodo safely out of Eriador, feed him the Stealth he needs to travel unseen, and help the Elven army hold the line so no northern haven falls. Every hope you preserve early is a turn the team buys to finish the objectives that stand before Destroy the One Ring.

How they play

Arwen operates out of a haven, so two of the six actions define her early game:

  • Prepare — at Rivendell, discard a region card to bank the symbol token it shows. Stockpile Stealth for Frodo's travels and Resistance (the Ring) to reroll dangerous search and battle dice.
  • Fellowship — when she shares a location with another player's character, hand over a card matching your region. This is how Arwen feeds Frodo the exact symbols he needs to slip past the Eye and, eventually, to destroy the Ring.

When the Ring-bearers pass through, use Travel to move alongside them and spend Stealth so Frodo covers ground without rolling a search. At an Elven location she can also Muster green troops by spending Friendship, and lend her Valor in an Attack to clear shadow troops threatening a northern haven. Think of her as a hope-and-supply hub in solo play, and a symbol courier who thrives on the Fellowship action with a partner beside her.

Strengths

  • Arwen is thematically tied to Hope — the game's shared life total. A hero who helps the team preserve or recover hope is worth her weight in mithril, because reaching Despair (0) loses the game outright for everyone.

  • Starting at Rivendell puts her in a haven from turn one — a refuge where battle Overrun results are ignored and Frodo's Exposed searches don't bite while he shelters there — and right on the Ring-bearers' early path out of the Shire. She can Prepare symbols in safety while she waits to meet Frodo.

  • She stands close to the Elven (green) army of the north, so she can Muster allies and add her blade to an Attack that keeps northern havens from falling — each fallen haven would cost the team 3 hope.

Weaknesses

  • !

Rivendell is a long way from Gondor and Mordor, where the war's biggest battles and late objectives unfold. Once Frodo moves on, Arwen can feel stranded in a quiet north unless she commits several Travel actions to catch up.

  • !

Her best trick — the Fellowship action — needs another player's character in the same location, so it simply doesn't work in solo play. With one player she has to lean on Prepare and Travel instead of gifting cards directly.

  • !

Arwen is a figure of light and hope, not a dedicated warrior like Éowyn or Legolas. Don't count on her to grind down heavy shadow stacks or hunt Nazgûl on her own — her battle dice are support, not a main engine.

Tips & tricks

  • Tip

Plan the team's opening so Frodo's path runs through or near Rivendell. Being beside the Ring-bearers lets you spend Stealth on their Travel and use Fellowship to hand Frodo cards — the two things that keep his searches from bleeding hope.

  • Tip

Use quiet early turns to Prepare a reserve of Stealth and Resistance tokens at the haven. Stealth covers Frodo's travel without a search; Resistance lets you reroll a bad search or battle. Arriving at the meetup with tokens already banked is far stronger than scrambling for cards on the spot.

  • Tip

Before you chase the Fellowship south, make sure no northern haven is about to fall to advancing shadow troops. A quick Muster of Elven troops or a well-timed Attack here saves the 3 hope a lost haven would cost — hope the whole team needs to reach Mount Doom.

  • Tip

Hold a Resistance token or two as insurance for Frodo's most dangerous searches. When a Nazgûl-heavy region forces a fistful of search dice, a single Fate reroll can turn a hope-draining result into a clean Slip By.
