Paul Atreides

See the future one card at a time, and let certainty do your scheming.

Beginner-friendly (one complexity icon)

Background

Paul Atreides, heir of House Atreides, plays the quiet edge of prophecy. His Prescience lets you look at the top card of your deck at any time — a small window into the future that never closes. His Signet Ring ability simply draws a card, converting your house seal into pure tempo.

The rulebook marks Paul with a single complexity icon: his power asks for no setup and no combos, just the habit of always checking before you decide.

How you win

You win like everyone — race to 10 VP through Conflicts, Influence, and The Spice Must Flow — but with fewer surprises along the way. Knowing your next draw sharpens every choice: whether to buy a card (it lands atop your discard pile's future), when to reveal, and how hard to commit to a Conflict whose swords you can already half-count.

Play a balanced game and let the information advantage compound; Paul rarely loses to his own bad luck.

How they play

  • Check the top card before every decision — before playing your hand's last Agent card, before choosing a draw effect, before setting combat expectations
  • Spend the Signet Ring often — Paul's signet is one of the cleanest in the game: play it on an Agent turn, draw a card, keep the engine spinning
  • Sequence draw effects around Prescience — if the top card is gold, chase draw effects now; if it's chaff, spend this turn's placements elsewhere and shuffle sooner

Strengths

  • Prescience is always on and costs nothing. Across ten rounds, dozens of slightly better decisions add up to a visibly better game — with zero rules overhead.

  • "Draw a card" is tempo any strategy can use — Paul's Signet Ring never rots in your hand, whatever direction the game takes.

Weaknesses

  • !

Paul gets no extra resources, no discounts, no board presence — if you don't convert the information into better plays, he's effectively a vanilla leader.

  • !

His whole power lives in a habit. Forgetting to peek before key choices silently deletes your leader ability — new players do it constantly.

Tips & tricks

  • Tip

Peek before your Reveal turn purchases: knowing whether your next hand starts hot or cold tells you whether to buy tempo (cheap cards now) or power (expensive cards for later shuffles).

  • Tip

Before committing garrison troops, peek: if your next draw adds swords, you can bid for first place with confidence rivals simply cannot have.
