Glossu "The Beast" Rabban

Start richer, recruit harder, and let brutality be its own strategy.

Beginner-friendly (one complexity icon)

Background

Glossu "The Beast" Rabban is the bluntest instrument in the box — and the only leader who changes your starting resources: Arrakis Fiefdom hands you an extra 1 spice and 1 Solari before the first turn. His Signet Ring, Brutality, recruits 1 troop — or 2 if you hold any Faction Alliance.

One complexity icon, zero subtlety: Rabban plays an honest, aggressive game of early economy converted into a standing army that never stops applying pressure.

How you win

Win Conflicts — early ones especially. Your head-start spice and Solari make round one stronger than anyone's, and every signet play stocks the garrison for the next war. Chase an Alliance (the Fremen track pairs naturally with a fighter's water needs) to upgrade Brutality to two troops, then keep the pressure permanent: with Rabban, second place in a Conflict is a failure of planning.

Conflict VPs, Control income, and an Alliance point or two carry you to 10 while quieter engines are still tuning.

How they play

  • Spend the head start immediately — the bonus spice and Solari are worth most in round one: an early Hagga Basin harvest or a fast Rally Troops visit sets the tone
  • Signet on Agent turns headed to combat spaces — the fresh troop deploys the same turn, turning the ring into direct battlefield strength
  • Prioritize one Alliance — Brutality at two troops per signet is one of the best repeatable effects in the game; pick the track your cards naturally feed
  • Claim Control — win the Conflicts that grant Arrakeen or Carthag Control and let the income fund the next army

Strengths

  • The only leader with extra starting resources. Round one options nobody else has — an immediate 2-water Great Flat harvest line or early recruiting — snowball in a ten-round game.

  • Brutality makes every Signet Ring play a soldier (or two, allied). Rabban rebuilds a spent garrison faster than any rival, so he can afford wars others must skip.

Weaknesses

  • !

Everything Rabban does points at combat. In rounds whose Conflict rewards don't suit you — or when two rivals also arm up — the leader ability adds little to an economic pivot.

  • !

A fixed +1/+1 head start stops mattering once everyone's engine matures — if mid-game arrives without a VP lead, Rabban has spent his advantage.

Tips & tricks

  • Tip

The Fremen track suits The Beast: Hardy Warriors and Stillsuits are combat spaces, the 2-Influence VP comes naturally, and the Alliance upgrades your signet — one track, three payoffs.

  • Tip

Aggression isn't obligation. Skip a Conflict whose rewards are weak for you, bank troops with the signet, and hit the next one with an army nobody can answer.
