Princess Irulan

The historian writes the cheap cards into legends — and the legends into spice.

Intermediate (two complexity icons)

Background

Princess Irulan, chronicler of the Imperium and daughter of the Emperor, works in small, precise strokes. Her passive, Imperial Birthright, draws an Intrigue card when you reach 2 Emperor Influence (and again if you fall below and return). Her Signet Ring, Chronicler's Insight, offers a choice each time: acquire a 1-Persuasion card directly to your hand, or trash a card from your hand — gaining 2 spice if it cost 1 or more.

Two complexity icons: her ring is a sculptor's tool, and knowing when to add, when to cut, and when to cash is the whole craft.

How you win

Sculpt relentlessly. The to-hand acquisitions give instant tempo (the card works this turn); the trashes keep the deck lean; the 2-spice conversions turn yesterday's cheap buys into today's worm summons and space costs. Alongside it, one early Emperor climb banks the Intrigue and opens Imperial Privilege.

Her 10 VP comes from craft: an efficient deck buying The Spice Must Flow earlier than expected, Influence thresholds on the Emperor track, and Intrigue cards timed like footnotes that decide the argument.

How they play

  • Draft the 1-cost row — cheap cards straight to hand are pure tempo; even mediocre ones become 2 spice later, so almost nothing is a dead buy
  • Run the recycling loop — acquire cheap, play it while fresh, trash it for spice when better cards arrive; Irulan's deck stays small and current
  • Bank the Emperor threshold early — 2 Influence is an Intrigue card plus the doorway to Imperial Privilege; Dutiful Service and Sardaukar both climb it
  • Trash with the other hand — her ring plus Feyd-style discipline: never let starting chaff survive once replacements land

Strengths

  • Cards bought to hand skip the discard pile entirely — Irulan's purchases fight, persuade, or place spies the same turn, a full shuffle ahead of everyone else's.

  • Her ring gives every cheap card a second life as 2 spice — she can overbuy tempo early and liquidate it later, an economic flexibility no other leader has.

Weaknesses

  • !

Everything Irulan does is incremental — no army spike, no doubled rewards, no free placements. Falling behind on Conflicts can leave her sculpting an elegant second place.

  • !

The signet's add-or-cut choice is genuinely hard, and a wrong read compounds: trashing tempo you still needed, or hoarding chaff that should have been spice.

Tips & tricks

  • Tip

Late game, treat her ring as a bank card: holding any 1-cost card means holding 2 spice — exactly a worm summon, a Maker space fee, or the last Persuasion point converted.

  • Tip

The Imperium Row refills instantly — after anyone's purchase, check whether a 1-cost card slid in. A signet held for the right refill is a free draft pick nobody else can take.
